A vernacular regency period high-back armchair made from fruitwood and elm, with an upholstered seat. The chair has a striking almost sculptural shape which I think is rather beautiful, especially when viewed from the side when you notice the curve of the back. I believe this style of chair was made in East Anglia.A beautifully designed chair that has real presence. I think this may have had a wooden seat originally (other chairs I have seen of this style all have dished wooden plank seats) but this had a very dilapidated faux leather cover on we acquired, it, and under that a fabric cover with horsehair stuffing beneath, so it has obviously had an upholstered seat for some time, if not from new. We have recovered the seat in a yellow ochre linen fabric with a simple green and ecru stripe canvas trim. Condition: The chair has unfortunately suffered from woodworm in the fruitwood areas in the past. This is especially obvious in the legs and armrests. There is no evidence that th...
