A vernacular regency period high-back armchair made from fruitwood and elm, with an upholstered seat. The chair has a striking almost sculptural shape which I think is rather beautiful, especially when viewed from the side when you notice the curve of the back. I believe this style of chair was made in East Anglia.
A beautifully designed chair that has real presence. I think this may have had a wooden seat originally (other chairs I have seen of this style all have dished wooden plank seats) but this had a very dilapidated faux leather cover on we acquired, it, and under that a fabric cover with horsehair stuffing beneath, so it has obviously had an upholstered seat for some time, if not from new. We have recovered the seat in a yellow ochre linen fabric with a simple green and ecru stripe canvas trim.
Condition: The chair has unfortunately suffered from woodworm in the fruitwood areas in the past. This is especially obvious in the legs and armrests. There is no evidence that th...e woodworm is active but we have treated it as a precaution. Otherwise the chair is in good solid condition and fully useable.
