Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century overmantel mirrors were specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace, often featuring grand proportions, arched or rectangular formats, and ornate gilt frames intended to reflect light and enhance the formal rooms of the period.

These frames typically consist of a carved wooden or composition core finished with layers of gesso and gold leaf or gilt paint, often incorporating applied ornamentation at the base supports or corners.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction methods such as hand-cut mirrored glass with subtle oxidisation or foxing, timber backboards held with hand- forged or early slotted screws, and craquelure or wear consistent with age within the gesso and gilding.

Positioning the mirror above a contemporary or period fireplace anchors the room vertically, while leaning it casually against a wall introduces a relaxed juxtaposition to minimalist furniture and clean architectural lines.

Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging the delicate metallic leaf, and clean the glass using a microfiber cloth and a minimal amount of glass cleaner applied directly to the cloth rather than the mirror.
