Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors gained widespread popularity during the Regency and Victorian eras in Britain, designed specifically to sit above a fireplace hearth. They served both functional and stylistic purposes by reflecting candlelight and firelight to brighten grand reception rooms.

These mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber bases coated with gesso, a plaster-like material used to create detailed decorative moldings. Gold leaf was then applied over the gesso, enclosing a silvered glass mirror plate.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature signs of natural age, such as slight cracking or fine lines within the gesso, known as craquelure. Additionally, original backboards often show aged pine panels, and the glass may display light oxidisation or subtle silvering imperfections.

Positioning a gilt mirror above a chimney breast or mantelpiece creates a striking focal point in modern or traditional living areas. It can also be paired with contemporary furniture to provide warmth and architectural scale through contrasting finishes.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth without applying heavy pressure. Avoid water, commercial spray cleaners, or solvents, as humidity and moisture can dissolve the gesso substrate and damage delicate gold leaf.
