Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror from this period features a flat base designed to rest on a fireplace mantelpiece, paired with an arched top rim. Often decorated with carved crestings such as cartouches, scrolls, or acanthus motifs, these mirrors were crafted to enhance natural light and proportions in formal reception rooms.

Traditional giltwood frames were constructed from carved timber, often pine or lime, coated with gesso (a chalk and glue mixture) and clay bole. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied using water or oil gilding techniques before being burnished or distressed.

Authentic period pieces show signs of natural age, including slight oxidisation or foxing on the silvered glass backing, wear to the gilding exposing the reddish clay bole underneath, and hand-cut wooden backing panels with iron tacks.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room fireplace or resting atop a dining room sideboard. Pair the ornate metallic frame with neutral wall paint, modern panelling, or clean-lined contemporary furniture to create a balanced contrast.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or dry painter brush. Avoid water, commercial chemical cleaners, or liquid polishes, as moisture can dissolve gesso and detach the delicate gold leaf layer.
