Regency Giltwood Overmantel Mirror

Description

This Regency giltwood Egyptian Revival overmantel mirror dates to circa 1810 and retains its original mercury mirror plate and original water gilded finish.

The breakfront cornice is profusely carved with acanthus and stiff leaf decoration above a neatly carved composite border. Egyptian pharaoh figures surmount reeded, ribboned and tapered baluster columns, which terminate on carved giltwood feet set on rounded plinths and flank the original mercury mirror plate.

The frame retains its original water gilded surface, with the oil gilding still showing through in places, preserving the character and surface of the mirror.

The frame remains untouched and retains its original mirror plate.

A Regency overmantel mirror is an architectural wall mirror designed to sit directly above a chimneypiece. Produced predominantly between 1810 and 1830, these pieces incorporate Classical, Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs within water-gilded wooden frameworks.

Frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with gesso, and finished using water-gilding techniques with thin gold leaf. The reflective panel was made using hand-blown mercury glass or early silvered glass plates.
