This Dutch provincial ladder back side chair dates from around 1800 and belongs to the rustic farmhouse style. Made from ash with a warm brown finish, the timber exhibits a natural wood grain and subtle patination developed through age. The construction incorporates four contoured ladder back slats, turned upright posts with acorn-style finials, and a tightly woven natural rush seat supported by multiple lower stretchers. Through tenon joinery is visible on the frame, alongside turned detailing on the front legs. Measuring 95 cm in height, 48 cm in width, and 45 cm in depth, this piece provides compact seating suitable for daily use. In a contemporary interior, this side chair functions well around a dining table, as a standalone seat in a hallway, or as a decorative accent in a living room or bedroom. The sturdy wooden framework and woven rush seating offer practical durability for seating needs while bringing traditional craftsmanship into the space. The restrained profile allows it to integrate easily into various domestic settings without dominating the room.

FAQs

Dutch ladder back chairs typically feature horizontal contoured back slats, turned uprights topped with finials, and woven rush seats, characteristic of 18th and 19th-century European provincial seating.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from native hardwoods such as ash, oak, or fruitwood, fitted with woven rush or straw seats held together with mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic period pieces display hand-turned posts, irregular wear patterns along the stretchers, hand-carved slat contours, and natural patination across the ash timber.

A single ladder back chair serves as a functional accent piece at a writing desk, in an entryway, or alongside modern furniture in a mixed-era dining space.

Keep the timber nourished using clear beeswax paste applied along the grain, and clean the woven rush seat gently using a soft brush or vacuum attachment to prevent dust accumulation.
