Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This tortoiseshell tea caddy dates from the early eighteenth century, reflecting Regency style through its grand form and decorative details. The rectangular box has a domed sarcophagus lid, mottled amber brown veneer, and small ball feet supporting the base. Additional elements include a silver rectangular plaque on the top lid, a shaped silver keyhole escutcheon on the front, and visible timber joins along the edges. The dimensions measure 14 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. Inside, the fitted interior contains three sections for teas alongside a central glass bowl and the original mixing spoon. The blonde tortoiseshell surface exhibits natural blemishes reflecting age and use over three centuries. This antique caddy functions practically as a decorative storage container on a sideboard top in a dining room or living space, holding small keepsakes or functioning as a display piece in a traditional home interior.

FAQs

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, tea was a costly commodity requiring secure storage, leading to the creation of lockable tea caddies crafted from luxury materials including tortoiseshell.

These boxes were constructed with a timber core layered with flattened tortoiseshell veneer, often finished with silver or metal keyhole escutcheons, cartouches, and small support feet.

Authentic period examples exhibit subtle variations in shell thickness, hand-cut dovetail joints on the internal timber frame, and natural organic mottling that varies across the surface.

Position the item on a console table, sideboard, or within a bookshelf alongside complementary period ceramics or books to create a visual focal point.

Keep tortoiseshell items away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and high humidity, cleaning only with a dry microfibre cloth to prevent cracking or lifting of the veneer.
