Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Restoration tea caddy dates from the 1800 period, styled with an octagonal form and canted corners. The box uses tortoiseshell, brass inlay in Boulle marquetry, and ebonised wood, presenting a warm brown and gold colour scheme. Visible details include elaborate foliate scrollwork across the hinged lid, the front panel, and the upper border, alongside gilded metal mouldings along the top and base edges. The exterior displays a keyhole plate with a French lock and key. The size is 15 cm high, 27 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. A piece of this scale sits well upon a sideboard top in a living room, dining room, or hallway to store small accessories or serve as a decorative display object.

FAQs

Originating in the 18th and early 19th centuries, tortoiseshell tea caddies were luxury containers created to secure tea leaves under lock and key. In France, cabinetmakers frequently combined tortoiseshell with brass inlay using techniques popularised by Andre-Charles Boulle.

Boulle work incorporates layered materials, predominantly tortoiseshell, brass marquetry, and ebonised timber frames. The interior compartments frequently feature foil linings or fitted metal canisters to protect contents from humidity.

Authentic early 19th-century pieces display hand-cut brass scrollwork, natural variations in the tortoiseshell veneer, and period-correct steel or brass locks. Signs of hand-filing on metal borders and original timber groundwork beneath the veneer further indicate period origin.

Place the caddy on a sideboard, console table, or library shelf as a focal decorative accent. Pairing intricate brass and tortoiseshell boxes with neutral backgrounds or modern artwork creates visual contrast in contemporary spaces.

Keep tortoiseshell items away from direct sunlight, central heating, and excess moisture to prevent veneer lifting or cracking. Clean metal surfaces gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that damage organic materials.
