Set of 8 Painted Carved Oak Derbyshire Dining Chairs, C1910

1900 - 1920
Description

A Handsome and Highly Decorative Set of Eight Painted Carved Oak Derbyshire Dining Chairs, circa 1910, in the 17th century Yorkshire Style (six single chairs and two grand carver armchairs)

Echoing the distinctive Derbyshire / South Yorkshire designs of the late 17th century, this striking set combines period character with everyday practicality. Each chair features a high, arcaded back, richly carved with voluted scrolls, foliate motifs, flower heads and acorn pendants, creating an impressive silhouette around any table.

Crafted in solid oak, the chairs are substantial, heavy and reassuringly sturdy. The construction showcases traditional craftsmanship: turned front legs, bobbin and baluster turning, peripheral stretchers and pegged joinery all contribute to strength, stability and longevity. The carved crescent shaped cross splats sit above comfortable panelled seats.

A later painted finish, likely a soft distressed grey or “shabby chic” tone, lends a lighter, decorative feel while allowing the carving to stand out beautifully. This sympathetic repaint gives you the charm of 17th century style without the darkness of an original oak patina, making the set especially suited to both traditional and contemporary homes.

The six side chairs and two generous carver armchairs work perfectly around a dining table, but also make wonderful accent pieces in a hallway, kitchen diner or reception room. Comfortable, very firm and ready to use, they bring an authentic sense of old world charm and warmth to any setting.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Derbyshire chairs originated in 17th-century England, named after the region where their distinctively carved, crescent-arched back rails were first produced. The style gained widespread popularity during the Jacobean era and was later revived during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods as part of the historical revival movement.

Traditional Derbyshire chairs are constructed from solid oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. Design hallmarks include turned front legs, straight back posts, solid timber seats, and heavy block-and-turned stretchers for structural stability.

Edwardian revival examples typically feature slightly lighter proportions and crisp, machine-assisted or uniform hand carvings compared to 17th-century originals. Look for natural age wear on stretchers, traditional joinery techniques, and historical wood grain beneath later painted finishes.

Carved oak chairs can be paired with a clean-lined modern oak or contemporary marble dining table to create visual contrast. Painted finishes help soften heavy carvings, allowing historic seating to integrate smoothly into contemporary or country-inspired schemes.

Dust painted wood regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical polishers or abrasive cleaners, and keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement and paint flaking.
