FAQs

A George II toilet mirror is an 18th-century tabletop vanity mirror designed to rest on a dressing table or chest of drawers. Originating in Great Britain between 1727 and 1760, these pieces feature an adjustable swing mirror mounted above a timber base with small drawers for storing grooming accessories.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised woods such as walnut and mahogany, featuring figured veneers, dovetail jointed drawers, and hand-cut brass hardware. The mirror glass itself was silvered or mercury-gilded plate glass, often framed with a carved or gilded inner sight edge.

Authentic George II pieces display hand-sawn timber backboards, hand-carved dovetail joinery on drawer linings, and natural age-related oxidisation on metal fitments. The original mirror plate typically exhibits silvering degradation or light atmospheric spotting consistent with historical production methods.

Position the piece atop a contemporary sideboard, console table, or bedroom dresser to serve as a functional architectural accent. Its wood tones and defined silhouette provide visual contrast when layered alongside minimalist ceramics, modern books, or table lamps.

Dust the woodwork regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to preserve the patinated surface. Avoid harsh chemical glass cleaners on historical mirror plates, cleaning only with a slightly dampened cloth to prevent moisture from penetrating the frame.
