Description

A beautiful pair of antique Edwardian lacquered walnut and cane armchairs. They were made in England, they date from around the 1900-1910 period.

The quality is superb, they have a gorgeous design in the Queen Anne style. The solid walnut frames have caned backs with lacquered decorations at the top of the back rests. They have shepherds crook arms, and stand on cabriole legs with carving at the knees and feet.

We have had the frames re-polished and the seats have been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is excellent for their age, with just some minor historical wear remaining here and there beneath the polish.

Width – 24 inches , 61 cm

Depth – 21 inches , 54 cm

Height – 38 inches , 97 cm

Seat height – 18 inches , 46 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian furniture, produced during the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, often draws inspiration from earlier periods such as Sheraton, Chippendale, and Hepplewhite, favouring lighter proportions, inlaid details, and refined craftsmanship compared to the heavier Victorian aesthetic.

These chairs typically feature dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or satinwood, often combined with natural woven cane for backrests and upholstered seat pads filled with traditional materials like horsehair, coir, and cotton.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut tenons, consistent patination on the timber, hand-woven cane panels rather than machine-extruded plastic alternatives, and signs of genuine age-related wear and tear.

Pairing historical cane furniture with modern minimalist textiles or placing it against neutral walls allows the intricate woodwork and woven textures to stand out as a focal point without overwhelming the space.

Maintain the timber by applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the polish, avoid placing the cane near direct heat sources to prevent the natural fibres from becoming brittle, and clean gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
