FAQs

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, developing from vernacular woodworking traditions where spindles and legs were wedged directly into a solid sculpted wooden seat.

Traditional Windsor chairs typically combine multiple timber species, utilising flexible woods like ash or yew for the bentwood bow, sturdy hardwoods like oak or beech for the turned underframe, and a single slab of soft elm for the saddled seat.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the joinery, tool marks from adzes and drawknives on the seat underside, hand-turned spindle irregularities, and natural timber shrinkage and oxidisation consistent with age.

These chairs provide organic warmth and textural contrast when paired with contemporary minimalist dining tables or used as eclectic accent seating in modern minimalist spaces.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically nourishing the timber with traditional beeswax to protect the original finish.
