This Scottish vernacular rocking chair dates from 1850. Crafted primarily from fruitwood, the piece has a warm brown colour and a waxed finish. The armchair displays extensive bobbin-turned spindles along the tall backrest, the side armrests, the legs, and the lower stretcher bars. A gently curved crest rail surmounts the back, above a shaped timber seat and curved wooden rockers. The sturdy construction rests on spool-turned legs connected by cross-stretchers, exhibiting a rich patination acquired through age and workshop care. The chair measures 103 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 70 cm deep, with a seating height of 46 cm. Ideal for residential interiors, the seating functions effectively beside a fireplace in a living room, in a traditional study, or as a reading chair in a bedroom, bringing a distinct Scottish country aesthetic to the space.

Scottish vernacular furniture refers to traditional regional seating and cabinetry crafted by local artisans using native timbers and established hand-construction techniques. Bobbin turning, characterised by repeated spool-like spherical mouldings along wooden components, became a prominent decorative feature during the nineteenth century.

These chairs were traditionally crafted from regional hardwoods such as oak, beech, birch, or ash. The bobbins were turned on a wood lathe, and individual frame components were joined using mortise and tenon joints to withstand the movement of rocking.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display slight variations in lathe turning depth due to handcrafting, along with original wear on the rocker runners and seat edge. Look for natural patination in crevices and traditional mortise joinery without modern screws or machine staples.

Position the rocking chair near a fireplace or reading nook to act as an accent piece. Soften the timber frame with a sheepskin throw or textured linen cushion to contrast the sculpted wood turnings within contemporary or rustic spaces.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry cloth to prevent build-up in turned bobbin grooves. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timbers finish, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
