A Louis Philippe mirror originates from mid-19th century France during the reign of King Louis Philippe I, characterised by clean lines, often with a rounded top corner frame and subtle classical ornamentation.

These mirrors are typically constructed from a carved wooden base, coated in layers of gesso (a mixture of plaster of Paris and glue) and bole, before being hand-gilded with gold leaf.

Authentic pieces often feature hand-carved wooden construction beneath aged gesso, original mercury glass with characteristic foxing, and backboards secured with handmade iron nails or screws.

Placing a large antique gilt mirror opposite a window maximises natural light, while resting it on the floor against a neutral wall creates an effortless, balanced focal point in a modern setting.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid chemical cleaners entirely. The mirror glass can be cleaned sparingly with a lint-free cloth and a mild vinegar solution, ensuring moisture does not seep into the fragile gilt edges.
