Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval mirror, named after the French word for horse due to its four supporting legs, is a dual-upright freestanding floor mirror. It features a full-length glass plate that pivots within a frame, allowing the user to adjust the angle. The design gained widespread popularity during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as dedicated dressing spaces evolved.

Victorian cheval mirrors were predominantly crafted using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. Construction typically involved hand-cut dovetail joints, wood veneers, decorative floral or scrollwork marquetry inlays, and cast brass hardware including side adjustment knobs and caster wheels.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display signs of period craftsmanship, such as hand-cut joinery, original silvering or mild foxing on the glass plate, and natural oxidisation on the timber underside. Look for brass fittings with aged patina and traditional wood-turning techniques along the frame posts and pediment.

A period cheval mirror serves as a focal point in contemporary dressing rooms, bedrooms, or spacious hallways. Its dark timber tones provide a grounding contrast against neutral wall palettes, while reflecting natural light across the room.

Clean the mahogany timber frame using a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to maintain the original finish. Avoid harsh chemical glass cleaners that can seep behind the frame and damage the historical silver backing of the mirror.
