Early 19th-century mirrors typically feature classical proportions, often incorporating neoclassical motifs such as rosettes, leaf scrolls, and architectural mouldings influenced by the Regency and late Georgian periods.

These frames are traditionally constructed from carved wood, gesso, and plaster, finished with layers of gilders gesso, paint, or gold leaf. The glass plates utilise a tin-mercury amalgam backing process rather than modern aluminium or silver.

Authentic mercury glass often exhibits characteristic dark speckling, foxing, uneven reflection, and minor imperfections beneath the glass surface caused by the degradation of the tin-mercury amalgam over time.

Placing an antique mirror in a modern setting creates a focal point that contrasts sleek modern lines with historic texture, working effectively above a mantelpiece or on a plain wall to enhance natural light.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Cleaning should be done sparingly with a dry or barely damp microfiber cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can damage the fragile historic finish.
