This set of four Victorian dining chairs dates from 1860 in the Victorian style, constructed from warm brown walnut with woven cane panels. Each high-backed piece displays an intricately carved eagle at the crest, detailed foliate scrollwork, turned side uprights, and a cane centre. The square cane seats rest on carved cabriole legs with scroll feet to the front, alongside turned out-swept back legs united by turned stretchers and an additional front stretcher bearing a carved eagle motif. The set measures 130 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. These sturdy chairs suit a formal dining room around a large timber table as seating for family gatherings or dinner parties. They also function well as decorative accent pieces placed against a hallway or living room wall when additional seating is required for guests. The structural soundness and rich timber tones integrate smoothly into both traditional and period-inspired interior schemes.

FAQs

Victorian Carolean Revival furniture reinterprets seventeenth-century Restoration period designs, featuring tall high-backed frames, intricate foliate carving, turned uprights, and natural cane panels.

Chairs from this era were predominantly constructed using solid walnut or oak frames, paired with hand-woven rattan cane for the back panels and seating areas.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved detail with subtle variations in depth, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, genuine wear along structural joints, and age-appropriate patination on the timber.

Ornate high-backed chairs can be paired with clean-lined modern dining tables to create visual contrast, or positioned as accent seating in hallways, studies, and bedrooms.

Maintain the wood with periodic application of clear beeswax polish, while keeping the natural cane hydrated in dry environments using a slightly damp cloth to prevent brittleness.
