Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Regency period writing slope is made from dark brown rosewood with contrasting gold-coloured brass inlay. The rectangular box is decorated with intricate foliate scrollwork along the borders, complemented by a central floral engravers plate on the top and a matching escutcheon around the working lock on the front, where a key with a small fabric tassel remains inserted. Additional visual elements include flat brass corner mounts framing the edges and polished timber surfaces showing natural grain patterns. Measuring 14 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 23.5 cm deep, this practical desk accessory fits neatly on an office desk, study table, or library credenza. It functions well in a home today for storing stationery, correspondence, or small keepsakes while adding a traditional period accent to a workspace.

FAQs

A writing slope, also known as a lap desk, is a portable wooden box featuring a slanted interior surface designed to fold open for writing correspondence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Regency writing slopes were commonly crafted from exotic hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany, often adorned with intricate brass marquetry, brass corner mounts, and felt or leather writing surfaces inside.

Authentic Regency pieces generally feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, original brass scrollwork flush-set into the timber, and authentic period lock mechanisms with aged patina on brass fittings.

An antique writing slope serves as a functional accent when placed closed on a modern office desk, library bookshelf, or console table to add historic texture and warm timber tones.

Keep the wood conditioned with a high-quality beeswax polish applied sparingly, avoid direct sunlight or damp environments to prevent veneer lifting, and gently buff the brass inlay with a dry microfibre cloth.
