Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror, also historically known as a chimney glass, is a large decorative mirror specifically proportioned to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece. Emerging as a prominent interior feature during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors served to reflect light across grand reception rooms while creating a central focus above the hearth.

19th-century overmantel mirrors were typically constructed with carved pine or lime wood frames coated in gessoa smooth mixture of chalk and glue binderto allow for intricate moulded detailing. Gold leaf was subsequently applied over a clay base known as bole, which imparts traditional gilding with its characteristic warmth and tonal depth.

Authentic 19th-century mirrors display natural wear to the gilded surface, often revealing reddish or grey clay bole beneath the gold leaf. The back usually features hand-cut wooden backing boards, while original mirror plates may show subtle silvering degradation, foxing, or light distortion characteristic of historical glass production.

A large gilt mirror can be placed above a traditional fireplace hearth to enhance ceiling height, or hung above a contemporary sideboard to contrast classic ornamentation with clean architectural lines. Positioning the frame opposite windows maximises light reflection across living spaces.

Clean gilt gesso frames using a dry microfibre cloth or soft camel-hair brush to gently remove accumulated dust. Avoid water, liquid spray cleaners, or commercial furniture polishes, as moisture dissolves delicate gesso moulding and causes irreversible loss of gold leaf.
