This pair of William IV mahogany carver chairs, dating to circa 1830, brings classic English design to domestic interiors. Each armchair stands 85 cm high, 48 cm wide and 50 cm deep, with a seat height of 43 cm, making them suitable for use at a dining table or as occasional seating in a drawing room or study. The rich brown timber displays a well-aged patina that highlights the classical lines of the pieces. The structural framework incorporates saddleback top rails, scrolling arms and carved foliate centre splats. Drop-in seats are upholstered in pale patterned fabric, contrasting with the dark wood. The front support posts are turned and tapered, while the rear legs utilize a sabre shape. Mouldings run along the lower seat rails beneath the cushions.

Named after King William IV, who reigned from 1830 to 1837, this design style bridges the Regency and early Victorian eras. It is characterized by bold curves, substantial mahogany timber, carved architectural details, and robust turned legs.

Craftsmen of this era typically used solid mahogany frames joined with mortise and tenon timber joints. Features include hand-carved back splats, turned front legs, and drop-in or traditional webbed upholstered seating.

Look for distinct design markers of the 1830s, such as saddleback top rails, carved scroll splats, forward-curving arm supports, and turned front legs paired with swept sabre rear legs.

Position carver chairs at the head and foot of a contemporary dining table to create contrast, place them beside a hall console, or utilise individual chairs as desk seating in a home office.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and apply clear beeswax polish periodically along the grain. Avoid aerosol polishes containing silicone, and keep the wood away from direct heat sources.
