FAQs

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular woodworking traditions where individual components were turned and shaped separately before being assembled into a solid wooden seat.

Traditional Windsor chairs typically feature a combination of native timbers such as yew, elm, ash, and beech, utilising pegged mortise-and-tenon joints to secure the spindles and legs directly into a deeply saddled solid wooden seat.

Authentic period pieces display hand-turned spindle variations, adzed tool marks on the underside of the seat, appropriate wood shrinkage, and a natural patina developed through centuries of use.

An antique Windsor chair can be integrated into modern spaces by pairing it with minimalist architectural elements or sleek dining tables to create a striking textural contrast and highlight its organic form.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically feeding the timber with traditional beeswax to protect the finish without sealing the wood.
