This George I wall mirror dates from the 18th century and is made of giltwood, glass, and gold leaf in a gold colour scheme. The tall frame exhibits elaborate carvings including a crown cresting at the top, a central scallop shell motif, scroll elements along the arch frame, and a split two-plate mirror glass. Signs of age and historic wear are visible across the gilded surface and within the aged glass plates, accompanied by a later paper retailer's label on the reverse from George Bishop in Aberdeen. The piece measures 143 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this mirror suits placement on a narrow wall space in an entrance hallway, a living room, or a bedroom, bringing a traditional English country house aesthetic to domestic interiors. It hangs vertically against vertical surfaces to reflect light and add architectural interest to rooms requiring period character.

These mirrors were constructed from carved pine or limewood coated with gesso and finished using water or oil gilding with thin gold leaf. Due to period glassmaking limits, larger frames housed a two-plate mercury-silvered mirror glass.

Authentic pieces feature bevelled mercury glass plates in two sections, hand-carved wood frames with visible jointing on the back, and natural surface wear. The glass typically exhibits light oxidisation and silvering degradation consistent with age.

Position a tall giltwood pier mirror on a narrow wall, between two windows, or above a hallway console table to accentuate room height. The gilded surface reflects surrounding lighting to expand smaller interior spaces visual scale.

Dust the gilded wood frame using a dry, soft camel-hair brush to prevent lifting the delicate gold leaf layers. Avoid water or solvent cleaning agents on the frame, applying glass cleaner strictly to a microfiber cloth for the mirror plate.

George I mirrors, produced during the early 18th century, typically feature tall, narrow proportions known as pier glasses. They frequently display carved crestings with motifs such as crowns, scallop shells, architraves, and gilded wood moulding.
