Overmantel mirrors gained immense popularity during the nineteenth century, specifically designed to be hung above fireplace mantels to reflect candlelight and amplify natural light within period reception rooms.

Authentic period mirrors typically feature a hand-carved wooden frame coated in gesso, a plaster-like mixture, which was then painstakingly hand-gilded with gold leaf or finished with gilt paint.

Authentic pieces often display signs of age such as foxing and oxidisation on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, alongside hand-cut joinery and aged gesso crazing on the wooden frame.

Such a statement piece works effectively as a focal point when mounted traditionally above a fireplace or positioned leaning against a living room wall to contrast contemporary furnishings with historical character.

The fragile gilded surface should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, abrasive chemicals, or direct sunlight that might degrade the delicate gesso finish.
