Nineteenth-century overmantel mirrors were specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace, often featuring architectural proportions and gilded wood frames that reflected candlelight to brighten Victorian and Regency rooms.

These frames were typically crafted from carved timber, such as pine or hardwood, coated with layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and binderwhich was hand-carved, moulded with ornamental details, and finished with gold leaf or liquid gold paint.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of age such as foxing and minor imperfections in the silvering of the old glass plate, hand-cut joinery at the frame corners, and historical backing boards secured with old slotted iron screws.

Pairing a gilded antique mirror with minimalist modern furniture creates a striking focal point, utilizing its reflective surface to amplify natural light and add a layer of historical contrast to clean lines and neutral colour palettes.

Gilt surfaces are extremely fragile and should be dusted gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth, strictly avoiding chemical cleaners, abrasive cloths, or excessive moisture which can damage the delicate gesso and gold leaf.
