The Regency style spans the early 19th century, heavily influenced by classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs, characterised by symmetry, architectural lines, and neoclassical ornamentation.

Antique giltwood frames were typically constructed from softwoods such as pine or gesso-coated timber, onto which thin sheets of gold leaf were applied using traditional water-gilding or oil-gilding methods.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of age such as foxing on the mirror plate, hand-carved wooden elements, gesso shrinkage cracks, and traditional joinery rather than modern fixings.

An antique giltwood mirror works well as a focal point in contemporary spaces, contrasting cleanly against minimalist neutral walls or adding historic warmth to transitional living areas.

Giltwood surfaces should be gently dusted with a dry, soft brush to avoid damaging the delicate gold leaf, while glass plates can be cleaned sparingly with a lint-free cloth and mild glass cleaner, ensuring no liquid seeps behind the frame.
