Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

French gilt mirrors from the 19th century often drew inspiration from earlier classical periods such as Louis XVI, featuring refined proportions, gilded plaster or gesso over wood, and delicate neoclassical motifs.

These frames are typically constructed from carved wood or composition applied to a wooden base, finished with gold leaf or gilt paint, and fitted with bevelled or flat silvered glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as minor losses to the gilt, oxidisation or foxing on the original mirror plate, and hand-carved construction details or period joinery on the reverse.

An antique gilt mirror works well as a focal point above a modern fireplace mantel or hung opposite a window to amplify natural light and create a striking contrast against contemporary neutral walls.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid using chemical cleaners or water, which can damage the delicate gold leaf finish. Clean the glass with a mild glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the surface.
