Victorian furniture, spanning the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, often drew inspiration from historical revivals such as Rococo, Gothic, and Elizabethan, characterised by ornate carvings and rich wood tones.

Cabinetmakers during the Victorian era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods like walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, frequently pairing exposed carved frames with luxurious upholstery fabrics such as velvet, damask, or needlepoint.

Authentication involves examining construction methods, such as hand-cut joinery, traditional screw types, and the presence of ageing indicators like patination on the wood and horsehair or coil spring stuffing beneath the upholstery.

Pairing ornate period seating with contemporary architectural elements or minimalist dining tables creates a striking contrast that highlights the craftsmanship of the antique without overwhelming the space.

To preserve antique wooden frames and upholstered surfaces, keep them out of direct sunlight, maintain stable indoor humidity levels, and periodically treat the wood with microcrystalline wax while avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
