This pair of Georgian tea caddies dates from the period around 1810 and exemplifies the English Country House style. Each vessel takes an oval form with flat, hinged lids and is constructed from burr walnut wood, displaying a warm brown colour with rich burr veneer figuring. The exterior surfaces show a smooth, polished finish that accentuates the natural timber grain and soft antique patina. Visible details include the fine wood grain patterns across the curved bodies and the thin metallic hinge lines dividing the top covers. Measuring 10 cm high, 16.5 cm wide and 9.5 cm deep, these compact containers scale appropriately for placement on a sideboard top or display cabinet shelf in a dining room or living space. They function well today as decorative objects for storage within a traditional interior scheme or as additions to a historical collection of treen and tea containers.

A tea caddy is a small container designed specifically to store loose tea leaves during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In the Georgian period, tea was a costly commodity, prompting cabinetmakers to produce secure, decorative wooden boxes often complete with foil linings and locks.

Craftsmen commonly utilised high-grade hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and satinwood, frequently applying decorative burr or feather veneers. The interior compartments were lined with lead foil or metal tin to protect the tea leaves from atmospheric humidity.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-crafted elements, including hand-cut joinery, slight variations in timber thickness, and period-correct hardware such as brass strap hinges. Genuine eighteenth-century walnut also displays a characteristic patina created by natural light exposure and age.

These decorative wooden containers can be placed on a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf to introduce warmth and historical texture. They also function effectively as tabletop storage for small modern essentials or stationery in a home office.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the finish. Keep the objects away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage or veneer separation.
