This pair of 18th century Renaissance Revival armchairs is formed from warm brown walnut with carved wooden frames. Each chair stands on carved paw feet with turned finials atop the high backrests, and incorporates bronze lion heads holding the red damask upholstery fabric through rings. The pieces feature elaborate carved grotesques to each handle, matching red and beige damask fabric on the seat cushions and upright backrests, and horizontal moulded wooden rails with dark geometric detailing. Measuring 121 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 68 cm deep, these armchairs provide substantial seating suitable for use in a living room, study, or hallway as statement occasional seats. They suit period interiors, farmhouse settings, or eclectic rooms where the detailed timber carving and patterned textile upholstery can function as central seating elements.

Originating in seventeenth-century France, the fauteuil is an open-armchair characterised by an exposed wooden framework and upholstered backrest and seat. These chairs evolved through the Baroque, Rococo, and Renaissance Revival periods, serving as formal seating in prominent residences.

Framing was predominantly carved from dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or beech to support elaborate sculptural details. Upholstery traditionally incorporated natural fibres, including silk damask, wool tapestry, or velvet, fixed with metal brass tacks.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery variations, subtle asymmetrical tool marks, and natural age-related oxidisation in the wood finish. Examination of the underside reveals traditional mortise-and-tenon construction and historical wear on structural joints.

Pairing carved wooden armchairs alongside streamlined modern sofas creates visual contrast within a living area. Placing a pair on either side of a fireplace or console table establishes structural symmetry in formal reception rooms.

Apply natural beeswax polish periodically to timber surfaces to prevent drying and maintain the grain. Vacuum textile upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment and position the chairs away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources.
