FAQs

Enamel is fragile and susceptible to chipping from impacts or thermal shock. Clean surfaces gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and keep them away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and abrasive cleaning agents.

As small decorative objects, antique enamel boxes are best displayed on a mantelpiece, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or placed thoughtfully on a side table as a focal point of historical interest.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-painted polychrome details with visible craquelure under magnification, genuine copper oxidisation on unglazed interior surfaces, and period-appropriate cast brass or pinchbeck mounts without modern machine screws.

These items were typically constructed from a stamped copper body coated with a vitreous enamel layer, which was then hand-painted and mounted with gilt-metal or brass bezels and hinges.

South Staffordshire enamel boxes refer to small luxury trinket and snuff containers produced in factories around Bilston and Wednesbury during the 18th century, characterised by copper bases coated in opaque white enamel and hand-painted decorative scenes.
