FAQs

French overmantel mirrors originated in the 18th century, designed specifically to hang above fireplace mantelpieces to reflect candlelight and light from windows around the room.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf or gesso, housing mercury or silvered glass plates backed with wooden panels.

Authenticity is indicated by foxing or oxidation on the mirror glass plate, hand-cut joinery on the backboards, and the presence of genuine gold leaf rather than modern metallic paint.

These pieces function effectively when hung directly above a fireplace or leaned against a wall atop a low console to add verticality and bounce natural light into a contemporary space.

Gilded surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, chemical sprays, or abrasive cloths that can damage the delicate gold leaf layer.
