FAQs

Victorian mirrors often feature ornate craftsmanship, incorporating classical motifs, heavily moulded frames, and rich surface treatments such as gold leaf or gesso.

Frames from this period were typically constructed from carved wood, composition ornament, or plaster over a wooden base, finished with genuine gold leaf or metallic paint.

Authentic pieces often display age-related characteristics such as foxing or slight oxidisation on the glass plate, hand-carved joinery, and older backing boards secured with traditional fixings.

Placing an ornate metallic mirror in a modern setting creates a striking focal point, contrasting clean architectural lines with historical texture and warmth.

Gilt surfaces are extremely fragile and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush. Avoid liquid cleaners, chemical solvents, or excessive rubbing, which can damage the delicate gold leaf layer.
