Windsor chairs originated in the English countryside during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular woodworking traditions where individual turned legs and vertical spindles were wedged directly into a solid sculpted wooden seat.

Authentic chairs traditionally utilise a combination of timbers to maximise structural integrity, typically pairing a durable, flexible wood like elm for the carved saddle seat with ash or beech for the steam-bent back bow and turned legs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned components with minor irregularities, wedge-tenon joinery where the spindles pierce through the seat top, and natural surface wear and oxidisation accumulated over decades or centuries of use.

These chairs provide organic warmth and textural contrast when pulled up to a contemporary dining table, paired alongside a minimalist desk, or used as a standalone accent piece in a living space.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and occasionally feeding the wood with traditional microcrystalline wax rather than modern silicone polishes.
