Vintage Ash & Elm Traditional Bentwood Windsor Armchair Cow Horn Stretcher

1920 - 1940
Description

Antique Bentwood Windsor Chair.

A Fine Traditional English Ash and Elm Armchair.

We bring to you this charming vintage Windsor armchair dating to circa 1930-1950, displaying classic country craftsmanship and wonderful character throughout. Constructed entirely from solid wood, the chair is predominantly Ash, featuring a beautifully curved steam-bent bow top rail supported by turned spindles and flanking a pair of pierced Elm centre back splats. At the heart of the piece sits a deeply contoured, sculpted solid Elm seat, showcasing striking natural grain patterns and rich tonal variation that only genuine Elm can offer. Underscoring its traditional heritage, the chair is supported on turned legs joined by a desirable steam-bent "cow horn" stretcher at the base, sweeping gracefully beneath the seat.

The design relies on centuries-old green woodcraft techniques, where straight-grained solid Ash is harvested, unseasoned, and placed into a steam box to soften the wood fibres. While pliable, the timber is hand-bent around wooden formers to set its iconic sweeping curves—both in the bow top rail and the crinoline cow horn stretcher—before drying into a rigid, structural shape of remarkable strength.

Having been through our workshop, the chair has been thoroughly checked, cleaned, and waxed to nourish the timber and enhance its authentic aged finish. The chair has never had any woodworm and is completely strong and solid with no loose joints or movement in joints, offering a remarkably comfortable sit that makes for a great everyday chair to use. Its timeless form makes it an exceptionally versatile addition to any setting—ideal as an accent chair, desk chair, or fireside seat for both country traditional and modern rustic interiors

This vintage traditional English Windsor armchair dates to the 1930 period and exhibits a rustic farmhouse style. Constructed entirely from solid ash and elm timber in a warm brown colour with a waxed finish, it displays a high steam-bent bow top rail supported by turned spindles, flanking a pair of pierced elm centre back splats. Below sits a deeply contoured, sculpted solid elm saddle seat above turned legs joined by a steam-bent cow horn stretcher, all resting on round feet. The piece measures 115 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 54 cm deep. Suitable for use in a home today, this armchair functions well as an accent chair in a living room, a desk chair in a study, or a fireside seat. Its timeless form fits both country traditional and modern rustic interiors, providing a remarkably comfortable sit for everyday use.

A Windsor armchair features a solid wooden saddle seat into which the chair legs, back spindles, and arm supports are directly socketed, originating in eighteenth-century England.

English country furniture makers typically combined elm for the carved saddle seat with steam-bent ash or beech for the hoops, spindles, and stretchers due to their grain strength.

Look for hand-shaped saddle seats, wedge-jointed construction where legs penetrate the seat timber, distinctive regional splat designs, and natural timber oxidisation beneath the seat rails.

Position the chair as a standalone reading seat paired with a minimalist side table, or integrate it alongside contemporary dining furniture for an eclectic mix of organic textures.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber and maintain the protective finish.
