Lincoln Restorations has dated this Elm Windsor Armchair to the 1930s.
A Fine Traditional English Ash and Elm Armchair.
Constructed entirely from solid wood, the chair is predominantly Ash, featuring a beautifully curved steam-bent bow top rail supported by turned spindles and flanking a pair of pierced Elm centre back splats. At the heart of the piece sits a deeply contoured, sculpted solid Elm seat, showcasing striking natural grain patterns and rich tonal variation that only genuine Elm can offer. Underscoring its traditional heritage, the chair is supported on turned legs joined by a desirable steam-bent "cow horn" stretcher at the base, sweeping gracefully beneath the seat.

The design relies on centuries-old green woodcraft techniques, where straight-grained solid Ash is harvested, unseasoned, and placed into a steam box to soften the wood fibres. While pliable, the timber is hand-bent around wooden formers to set its iconic sweeping curves—both in the bow top rail and the crinoline cow horn stretcher—before drying into a rigid, structural shape of remarkable strength.

Having been through our workshop, the chair has been thoroughly checked, cleaned, and waxed to nourish the timber and enhance its authentic aged finish. The chair has never had any woodworm and is completely strong and solid with no loose joints or movement in joints, offering a remarkably comfortable sit that makes for a great everyday chair to use. Its timeless form makes it an exceptionally versatile addition to any setting—ideal as an accent chair, desk chair, or fireside seat for both country traditional and modern rustic interiors
