A margin mirror, also known as a border or cushion mirror, consists of a main central glass plate bordered by secondary mirror segments set within a decorated frame, a design popularised in 19th-century decor.

These frames were typically sculpted from timber, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and finished with gold leaf using water gilding or oil gilding techniques around mirrored glass plates.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of hand-carved wood beneath the gesso, subtle wear or red bole showing through the gilding, period-appropriate timber backboards, and natural oxidisation on the glass plate.

Positioning a large oval mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or side console table creates a focal point that reflects light and adds architectural proportion to contemporary or traditional rooms.

Dust the gilded surfaces gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which can dissolve the gesso substrate and detach the delicate gold leaf.
