Georgian Mahogany Dressing Table Mirror

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality George II Period, 18th Century, Mahogany Dressing Table Mirror, Having Elegantly Shaped Mirror Plate Enclosed Within Giled Slip, Above Well Figured Base And Three Drawers With Original Brasswear, Raised On Original Ogee Shaped Bracket Feet.

Dressing table mirrors, often referred to as “toilet mirrors”were made from the beginning of the 18th Century onwards.

Designed to sit atop a dressing table, or chest of drawers, in the bedroom or dressing room they are found in a huge variety of sizes, woods, shapes, sizes and qualities.

This is a nice early example, George II as opposed to George III or later like most that can be found, dating of course to the early 18th Century, plus it is constructed from rich mahogany timbers which retain a good untouched colour and patina.

Although originally designed to sit on top of a dressing table it is of course most versatile and would suit a whole variety of locations around the home.

As is pretty much standard on these items the mirror plate is replaced, but not brand absolutely brand new and it is therefore very much fit for its original purpose. Overall the item is in very good condition and has received a natural wax polish by our restorers before being offered for sale.

Circa 1730.

Height - 26in.

Width - 18in.

Depth - 9.5in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian toilet mirror, also known as a toilet glass or dressing glass, is a tabletop swing mirror mounted on vertical supports above a box base containing small drawers. Emerging in popularity during the eighteenth century, these mirrors were placed on chests of drawers or dressing tables for personal grooming.

Georgian dressing mirrors were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as cuban mahogany or walnut, featuring secondary woods like pine or oak for drawer linings. Hardware was typically cast from brass, including keyhole escutcheons and small drop handles or knobs.

Authentic Georgian mirrors feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the base drawers, hand-planed timber surfaces on the reverse, and natural oxidisation around the brass fittings. Original mirror plates often exhibit minor spotting or desilvering due to mercury amalgams used in eighteenth-century glassmaking.

Position a Georgian toilet mirror on a contemporary sideboard, bedroom chest, or vanity unit to introduce warm timber tones and historical depth. Pairing the warm mahogany finish with neutral wall colours or modern ceramics creates a balanced visual contrast.

Maintain the mahogany frame by applying beeswax polish along the grain and buffing with a soft cloth to protect the original patina. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid spray cleaners that can seep behind the frame and damage the silvering.
