FAQs

Victorian shaving stands emerged during the 19th century as specialized furniture pieces designed for mens morning grooming rituals. These stands typically featured adjustable mirrors, small surfaces for shaving bowls, and dedicated holders for razors and accessories.

Cabinet makers predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as satin birch, mahogany, and walnut. Construction featured hand-turned pedestals, mortise and tenon joinery, and stable tripod or platform bases to support the weight of the tilting mirror.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved details, and genuine age-related patination on the wood and mirror glass. Look for traditional hand-cut screws, foxing on the original mirror plate, and timber shrinkage consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing.

This piece functions effectively as a decorative accent in a master bedroom or dressing room, paired with minimalist furnishings to highlight its traditional craftsmanship. It can serve as a functional vanity accessory or an organic focal point in an empty corner.

Dust the timber regularly with a dry, soft cloth and treat it periodically with microcrystalline wax to protect the finish. Avoid using modern chemical sprays or excessive moisture, and clean the mirror glass gently with a neutral glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than directly onto the surface.
