The Regency style spans the early 19th century and is characterised by neoclassical influences, drawing heavily on Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs, alongside a growing fascination with chinoiserie and exotic lacquering techniques.

These chairs typically utilised hardwoods such as beech or birch, which were painted or japanned to resemble lacquer, decorated with hand-applied gold leaf or stencilling, and featured woven cane seats and backs.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-woven caning, genuine hand-gilding showing natural wear, and subtle design proportions characteristic of early 19th-century cabinet making.

They serve as striking focal points in contemporary spaces when paired with minimalist tables or neutral textiles, allowing the contrast of the black lacquer and gold detailing to stand out.

Keep caned furniture away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent the natural cane from drying out or snapping, and dust gently using a soft, dry cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
