A Louis Philippe overmantel mirror, the gilt and gesso arched frame with rounded moulding and richly carved crest and with a scroll and shell inner border around an old plate, French circa 1840.

Condition: Overall very good, the mirror is in very good condition with no weakness to the frame, there are a couple of small losses to the lower corners of the frame, the plate is probably the original, the back has been replaced at some point but not recently, the gilding is rubbed leaving traces of the red palette beneath and the gesso. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid 19th-century French overmantel mirrors typically feature an arched upper frame, flat base designed to rest directly on a fireplace mantel, and elaborate carved crestings incorporating rococo scrolls, foliage, or cartouches.

These mirrors were constructed with soft wood frames coated in gesso (plaster), which was carved, layered with red bole clay, and finished with gold leaf gilding or paint before fitting mercury-glass mirror panes.

Authentic period frames show natural wear to the gilding and gesso, often revealing red clay bole underneath. Look for wooden backboards with hand-cut nails and silvering imperfections or foxing on the original mirror glass.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace surround, or lean it against a wall atop a console table or sideboard to add verticality, reflect light, and create a focal point within living or dining rooms.

Remove dust using a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster. Avoid liquid cleaners or moist cloths on giltwood and gesso surfaces, as water dissolves historical adhesives and strips gold leafing.
