Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This mid-eighteenth-century Georgian hall chair follows a distinct sgabello design in solid walnut, finished with a wax application that reveals a warm brown colour with original patination. The construction incorporates a shaped timber backrest bearing a recessed circular panel, a flat seat marked with a matching circular pattern, and sturdy trestle supports with shaped feet. Visible details include smooth wooden grain surfaces and traditional joinery lines along the uprights and seat frame. The dimensions stand at 101 cm high by 43 cm wide by 48 cm deep, providing an upright seating proportion well-suited for entryways or transitional spaces within a home. In a contemporary interior, this functional seating piece serves as a striking decorative element in entrance halls, corridors, or alcoves. The solid timber construction offers durability for occasional seating while functioning as a sculptural accent against walls or within period-inspired room schemes. The compact footprint ensures placement flexibility in narrow corridors or beside console tables without crowding the floor space. Natural light highlights the warm timber tones and geometric circular motifs, establishing a traditional focal point for residential spaces.

FAQs

Hall chairs originated in the 18th century as non-upholstered timber seating designed for entry halls and vestibules. They were intended for servants, messengers, or casual callers to wait briefly, often displaying family crests or formal decorative joinery.

These chairs were primarily constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak. Cabinetmakers employed traditional mortise and tenon joinery, carved splats, and solid timber seats to endure daily wear without delicate fabrics.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs, uneven wear consistent with age, and oxidation on the underside of timber elements. Walnut examples often show natural grain variations and original timber shrinkage line details.

A timber hall chair functions effectively as a sculptural accent in a foyer, landing, or study alcove. Pairing the warm walnut tones with neutral plaster walls or minimalist artwork creates a balanced contrast between period craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent splitting or warping. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional applications of natural beeswax maintain the timber patination and surface luster.
