This large Victorian overmantle mirror dates from 1880 and exemplifies traditional English country house design. Constructed from gilt wood and gesso with a gold finish, the piece features an arched top, a moulded frame, decorative scroll side corbels at the base, and small white porcelain feet. The mirror plate displays very faint streaks at the base alongside some minor spotting, while the surrounding timber shows a warm metallic sheen. At 111 cm high, 160 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, the mirror occupies a substantial footprint. Positioned in a contemporary home, this mirror sits directly above a mantelpiece in a living room, dining room, or principal bedroom to reflect light and expand the sense of space. The architectural profile and classic gilded surface coordinate easily with traditional fire surrounds, period marble mantelpieces, or minimalist plaster chimney breasts. The low proportions make it well suited for horizontal placement over standard fireplace openings, anchoring the wall space while maintaining a balanced arrangement.

FAQs

A Victorian overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror specifically designed to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece. Characterised by rounded arch tops and gilded ornamentation, these mirrors were manufactured during the nineteenth century to reflect light and enhance room proportions.

Victorian gilt mirrors were typically constructed from softwood or hardwood frames covered in plaster or gesso moulding, which was then decorated using gold leaf gilding techniques. Original mirror plates were often backed with mercury or silvering, producing soft reflective qualities.

Authentic Victorian mirrors feature signs of age, such as natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, wear to the gilding showing underlying reddish bole or white gesso, and hand-cut timber backing boards fastened with aged iron fittings.

An arched gilt mirror can be positioned above a fireplace, modern console table, or sideboard to create a focal point. Combining the warmth of aged gold leaf with contemporary clean lines adds historic depth to minimalist or classic interiors.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or horsehair brush, avoiding wet cloths or chemical cleaners that can dissolve original gesso and gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be applied carefully to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the mirror.
