FAQs

Eighteenth-century English giltwood mirrors typically feature classical or rococo motifs, characterised by intricate hand-carved wooden frames coated in gold leaf over a prepared gesso layer.

These pieces were crafted from softwoods such as pine or deal, intricately hand-carved, coated in successive layers of gesso, and meticulously gilded with genuine gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand-beveled mirror glass with slight oxidation, tool marks from historic carving chisels on the reverse, and crazing in the gesso and gilt layers.

Such a mirror serves as a dramatic focal point when hung above a minimalist mantelpiece or console table, creating a striking contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Giltwood requires careful maintenance in stable environmental conditions away from direct sunlight and moisture; surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush without chemical cleaners.
