Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This is an antique English travelling dressing table box in rosewood and brass, dating to the Regency period around 1820. The warm brown case exhibits rich caramel hues, a polished finish, and an inset brass keyhole escutcheon to the fascia. Inside, the box holds a fitted interior lined in cobalt blue velvet with ruched fabric on the lid, complemented by quality glassware with metal lids, a removable tray, and a slide-out drawer accessed via a brass-topped pin. Measuring 17 cm high, 30.5 cm wide, and 22.5 cm deep, this vanity case sits neatly on a sideboard top in a living room, dressing room, or hallway. The piece serves as both a decorative display item and a functional storage box for daily accessories, bringing traditional Regency style to modern interiors. The solid construction arrives waxed and polished, displaying a desirable aged patina throughout the timber casework alongside light foxing on the interior mirror plate. The fitted layout provides dedicated compartments for grooming items, maintaining an orderly arrangement on a table surface.

FAQs

Originating in the early 19th century, a Regency vanity case, or dressing box, was a portable wooden chest fitted with compartments and glass jars designed to hold grooming products and toiletries during travel.

High-grade timber such as mahogany, rosewood, or coromandel formed the exterior, while interiors were often lined with silk velvet, leather, and fitted with brass mountings and cut-glass containers.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints, heavy brass keyhole escutcheons, original cut-glass containers with silver or plated lids, and period-accurate velvet or silk linings.

Display the box open on a dressing table, sideboard top, or console table to showcase the detailed interior compartments and glass jars, serving as both decorative art and storage for small personal items.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement and cracking, polish with natural beeswax, and clean metal or glass components using a soft dry cloth.
