FAQs

The Louis Philippe style emerged in France during the mid-19th century, characterised by understated elegance, clean classical lines, and softer, more rounded corners compared to the preceding ornate periods.

These mirrors typically feature a hand-carved wooden frame coated with gesso and bole, onto which thin sheets of gold leaf are applied using traditional water-gilding techniques.

Authentication involves inspecting the frame construction for hand-carved joints, examining the gilt surface for natural ageing and wear, and checking the mirror plate for historical imperfections, oxidation, and silvering loss.

An antique gilt mirror works effectively as a focal point when hung above a minimalist mantelpiece or console table, creating a deliberate contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary decor.

Gilded surfaces are extremely delicate and should only be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, polishes, or abrasive materials that can damage the gold leaf.
