This Victorian music box from circa 1875 is a large cylinder model featuring visible bells and an original song sheet from Geneva maker Etouffoirs en Acier. The rectangular body combines warm brown rosewood with ebonised wood and brass, displaying floral marquetry, geometric stringing, and ebonised borders on the lid alongside brass keyhole escutcheons on the front and side. The design includes a hinged wooden lid over a dark finished case 20 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 28 cm deep. Placed on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or living room, the piece plays tunes individually on a loop or automatically as the cylinder revolves, while the accompanying bells can be turned on or off at will.

Developed in the 19th century, predominantly in Switzerland, cylinder music boxes use a revolving pinned brass cylinder to pluck tuned metal comb teeth, generating intricate musical melodies housed inside decorative wooden cases.

Traditional construction involved ebonised timber, rosewood or walnut veneers embellished with floral marquetry, along with brass fittings and internal steel and brass mechanical movements.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-cut marquetry inlay, heavy brass mechanical movements, original steel comb teeth aligned with cylinder pins, and age-appropriate patination across the wood and metal components.

Position the item on a sideboard, console table, or writing desk alongside leather-bound books and understated brass objects to highlight its rich timber grain and mechanical detailing.

Store the box in a stable indoor climate away from direct sunlight, wipe the exterior gently with a microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax polish periodically, and refrain from over-winding the mechanical spring.
