This Victorian music box from circa 1860 is constructed from warm brown rosewood with contrasting boxwood line inlay to the lid and a lock escutcheon centered between two brass knobs. The interior lid is ebonised and displays a decorative tune card beneath the black finish, while a glass dust cover protects the internal brass cylinder mechanism. The hinged lid opens upward to reveal the mechanical interior. Measuring 14 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 22.5 cm deep, this piece is suitable for placement on a sideboard top or a library table in a home study or living room today. It functions both as an operating musical instrument playing 12 airs and as an item of tabletop display.

A nineteenth-century cylinder music box is an automatic mechanical instrument where sound is produced by a revolving brass cylinder fitted with tiny pins that pluck the tuned teeth of a steel comb. Originating in Switzerland, these instruments were housed in fine timber cabinets designed to act as acoustic soundboards.

Victorian music boxes were constructed using brass for the pinned cylinders and gearing, steel for the comb teeth, and glass for inner protective dust covers. The outer cabinets were crafted from high-grade timbers such as rosewood, walnut, or mahogany, often embellished with stringing or marquetry.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy cast beds, hand-cut steel comb teeth, and original printed or handwritten paper tune cards attached to the inner lid. The presence of period winding levers or key mechanisms alongside brass fittings help confirm age.

A large cylinder music box serves as a functional statement object on a hallway console, sideboard top, or library desk. Displaying the box with the main lid open reveals the internal brass mechanism and tune card, creating visual interest.

Keep the instrument in a stable temperature environment away from dampness and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and metal oxidisation. Avoid fully winding the spring mechanism when not in regular use, and dust the cabinet gently with a dry microfibre cloth.
