The Adam style, popularised by the brothers Robert and James Adam in the 18th century, draws heavily on classical Roman and Greek architecture, featuring symmetrical designs, urn motifs, swags, and refined neoclassical ornamentation.

Authentic period mirrors are typically constructed from carved softwoods or hardwoods, coated with a layer of gesso, and finished with either gold leaf or gold paint, often featuring hand-carved decorative elements such as urns and pendent husks.

Authentication involves examining the gesso and base wood for age-related oxidisation, shrinkage cracks, hand-carved joint construction, and the presence of older mirror glass exhibiting slight foxing or waviness.

Placing an ornate gilt mirror against a minimalist, neutrally painted wall creates a striking focal point, balancing traditional craftsmanship with clean, modern architectural lines.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster. Avoid liquid cleaners, chemical solvents, and abrasive cloths, which can strip the thin metallic leaf.
