This Regency gilt pier mirror presents a rectangular wall-hanging format finished in gold and black. The upper section displays a prominent cornice set with spherules, positioned above a decorative foliate frieze panel and an embossed leather panel. Flanking the bevelled mercury mirror plate are fluted pilasters enriched with ebonised details and intertwined foliate swags. The timber construction incorporates softwood, giltwood, and composition elements, whilst the glass shows visible signs of age and deterioration. Measuring 103.5 cm in height, 64 cm in width at the top, and 58 cm in width at the base, the piece offers a vertical profile suited for installation above a console table or along a narrow wall space in a hallway, drawing room, or reception area.

FAQs

Giltwood frames must be dusted gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking fragile gold leaf. Damp cloths and chemical solvents should be avoided on gilded surfaces, while glass cleaner should be applied carefully with a cloth to prevent liquid from seeping into the surrounding frame.

A classical pier mirror is frequently positioned between tall windows, above a hallway console, or resting upon a fireplace mantel to draw the eye upwards. Placing the mirror opposite a light source maximises reflection and brings depth to contemporary or traditional room schemes.

Authentic Regency mirrors display period construction methods, including hand-carved softwoods, lap-jointed frames, and subtle foxing or grey spotting on mercury glass plates. The gilding often shows genuine surface wear, water-gilding burnish, and red or grey clay bole undercoats visible where worn.

Traditional Regency gilt mirrors were constructed using a softwood frame overlaid with plaster or composition ornament, which was then gilded using gold leaf. The reflective panel consisted of original mercury-backed plate glass, often framed with ebonised or painted highlights.

A Regency pier mirror is a tall, narrow wall mirror crafted during the early 19th century, designed specifically to hang on the wall space or pier between windows. These mirrors typically feature architectural elements such as cornices with ball mouldings, fluted side pilasters, and classical decorative friezes.
