FAQs

Giltwood mirrors have been utilised in European interior design for centuries, traditionally crafted using thin sheets of gold leaf applied to a carved wooden or gesso base to reflect light and denote status.

Authentic period mirrors typically feature hand-carved softwood or hardwood frames coated in gesso, finished with water or oil gilding, and often fitted with historic handmade mirror plates displaying natural oxidisation.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the composition of the gesso, signs of hand-carving tool marks, the presence of foxing or distortion within the glass plate, and the ageing characteristics of the backing materials.

Such pieces function effectively as focal points when hung above functional furniture pieces or positioned opposite light sources to enhance spatial depth and luminosity in a room.

Preservation requires avoiding direct sunlight, maintaining stable humidity levels, and gently dusting the delicate surface with a soft, dry brush without applying chemical cleaning agents to the gilded finish.
